Meditation is a wellness practice that has been around for thousands of years. One of the best things about meditation is that you can meditate pretty much anywhere! It involves focusing on the breath and improving concentration and awareness with the goal of ultimately paying attention to your own mind without judging your thoughts or feelings. A simple process to meditate includes sitting in a quiet comfortable space, taking deep breaths, and allowing thoughts to come and go as you continue to bring your focus back to your breath.
Meditation can provide great mental and physical benefits that can carry over to your work as well:
- Reduce Stress: Meditation reduces stress and decreases the levels of cortisol in our bodies. According to a study at UC Davis, participants who meditated saw major benefits in only a few weeks of meditation.
- Improve Collaboration: Group meditation can improve collaboration, innovation and quality of work.
- Curb Emotional Reactions: In high-stress situations, it’s natural to feel intense emotions as you’re clamoring to get things done on time. Meditation allows you to focus more on the task at hand and not be derailed by emotional fluctuations.
- Enhance Empathy: Performing compassion meditation exercises regulate positive emotions and builds empathy and kindness, in addition to making us more affectionate and friendly.
