According to the WHO, depression and anxiety disorders have cost the American economy dearly – almost $1 trillion each year! Doing productive and fulfilling work can be important to our overall happiness, but it’s important to find a healthy balance between work and other aspects of life. Unhealthy workplaces can create anxiety, stress, and tension among employees. Knowing yourself is key to understanding when you may need to step away from work to get some rest and relaxation.
Here are 5 signs you urgently need to take a mental health day:
- You’re feeling constantly irritated: If you find yourself chronically irritable and frustrated day after day, then it may be time to take a mental health day. Don’t ignore the warning signs by gritting your teeth and forcing yourself to work—be aware of your body’s signals and take some time to rejuvenate yourself away from your to-do list.
- You feel physical distress: If you notice your body is physically rebelling against you with an increased influx of back and neck pain—take note, physical symptoms of distress are a clear cry of overwhelm from your body.
- You can’t focus: Are you becoming reckless with your quality of work? Are you desperate to just “get it over with” but are barely able to summon the willpower to work? If you relate to these questions, this is a clear sign of work burnout. You must take some time off, even if it’s just the weekend: find some time to keep your mind totally away from work before diving back into your projects.
- You’re often sick: Chronic stress can devastate your body’s immune system, making you more susceptible to illness. If you find yourself frequently battling cold after cold, it’s a telltale sign your body can’t keep up with the stress any longer. Take time to rest your body by fostering a solid sleep, exercise, and meal schedule to heal your overstressed body.
- You have no enthusiasm: Does your work no longer excite you even in the littlest of ways? If you’re eagerly nodding your head, then It’s time for a break. Ask your employer for a day off to nurse your mental health back into shape. Some time away from work will allow you to come back with a fresher perspective.
